There's a particular loneliness to losing a pet that no one warns you about. The grief itself is enormous. But underneath it is something quieter and almost worse — the sense that you're supposed to be over it already. No bereavement day at work. No casseroles on the doorstep. Someone says "you can always get another one," and means well, and has no idea they've just made it harder.
